Zorowar walked into the Candidate Barracks with a spring in his step that had not been there in Turns. Being the son of a holder who had turned weyr drudge after the death of her husband...the deserved death, by the account she had given to him a Turn before...he had not been accorded the right to Stand of the true Weyrbred.
He had, in fact, been about to beg a ride to a Hold where he could seek work. He could not bear the thought of watching this Hatching from the stands...and the next...and the next. The blue dragon, though, had had other ideas.
Zorowar would be watching this Hatching from the Sands, not the audience. And he felt it was only his due. He had always worked as hard as the sons and daughters of dragonriders. The only fair reason to deny him Candidacy would have been if he had no sensitivity to the dragons. Which, apparently, he did.
"Well," he said as he unpacked his things. "I'm rather glad to be here." He glanced around for other Candidates...to see their reaction to the drudge's kid being with them.

Velain was sitting cross-legged on his cot, reading a book, but he looked up when the other candidate spoke aloud. He frowned as he scrutinized the new guy with his usual critical eye.
"That makes one of us," He remarked dryly. "Sure, I want a dragon, but don't you think these barracks are just awful?" He swept his hand around to indicate the whole room, which was, in his opinion, pitifully small and bare.
"Oh, buck up." Sydiana piped up from where she was sitting. Then she blushed at her uncharacteristically harsh tone and turned her attention to the new candidate. "Hi, I'm Sydiana. You can call me Syd. Did you just get here?" She thought he looked vaguely familiar, but she couldn't quite place him.

Zorowar shook his head. "I've lived at the Weyr for Turns, just only now been allowed to stand," he admitted.
At Velain's words, he glanced around. "Not really. Get used to it, though. The weyrlings have to live in barracks until their dragons can fly. But then...you get your own weyr to decorate how you want." He already had some visions for his.
Then, he turned his attention to the girl and smiled at her. "And I'm Zorowar. Just Zor will get my attention well enough." After all, who wanted to yell three syllables across a room. He was rather used to 'Zor, do that'. And would have to stay used to it at least until the eggs cracked.

"Oh," Sydiana said, recognizing him now. He was a drudge, she recalled. Well, it didn't matter they were all just candidates now. She shot a glance at Velain, glad that Zor hadn't articulated his former rank, because that candidate wouldn't agree with her idea about that. "Nice to meet you, Zor," She said politely, smiling.
Velain groaned. Weyrling barracks? Didn't people with dragons deserve a room of their own? He sighed and put his book spine-down, cracking it, which made Sydiana wince. "I'm Velain."

Zor offered Syd the warmest smile he could back...she was a girl, after all. "So...the question of the day? Do *you* think the eggs laid by the purple dragon will actually hatch? I heard a rider speculating that they were all going to be duds...I hope not!" But the way the purple had laid and then abandoned, he had to wonder...and who knew? It was the first and maybe the last purple dragon on Pern...there was no rule book for it.
"And what color are you hoping for...are you a queen hopeful, Syd?" What girl wasn't...but then, who knew what went through any other person's mind. "I'm sort of guessing I'll maybe get a blue, but I don't know."

"Of course they will!" Sydiana answered, a bit more forcefully than she had intended. "My sister Fhay, who's a greenrider, said that dragons don't lay eggs unless they're going to hatch, and I think she's right," She explained. Even though the Purple had abandoned her clutch, it didn't mean that they wouldn't hatch. That's what she had to hope, anyway.
"Oh, I don't know what color I want. I just want a dragon to choose me!" She answered the next question confidently. "What about you?"

Zorowar hrmed. "I'm far too interested in girls for a green, too flighty for a brown and don't *want* a bronze, so I'm guessing blue is most likely." He liked blues...small, fast. "Assuming there aren't any more of the black ones. I wouldn't mind one of those."

"That's part of why I like the new colors. More options," Sydiana said. She thought that she didn't fit either Green or Gold well, although Fhay said that those were just stereotypes and dragons chose only on personal preference. "I think there could be more Blacks in Miracath's clutch. And purples, too."
((Should we finish this? I don't usually like RPing characters as candidates once they have Impressed.))

Zorowar shrugged. "If there's another black, I wouldn't turn it down." Purples clutched, so he betted they didn't choose boys. "I gotta get unpacked, though." And he turned back to that task.
OOC: 'Kay.
